Guidelines for Judges Chapter Novice Quartet Contest
Quartets will be judged on singing (100 pts maximum), presentation (100 pts maximum), and entertainment (25 pts maximum). Each judge will judge in all three categories. A total score of these categories will be the final score for the quartet. In the case of a tie, the higher singing score will determine the winner.
Items to pay particular attention to in the judging categories:
SINGING – (100 pts max) intonation, precision (attacks and releases), balance and blend of the four voices, phrasing and dynamics, clarity of
sound and lyrics, creation of overtones.
poor 0-20 pts; fair 20-40 pts; good 40-60 pts; very good 60-80 pts; excellent 80-100pts
PRESENTATATION (100 pts maximum)- effectiveness in imparting the mood of the song through facial expressions, gestures, bearing, choreography,
props or costume.
use the same point scale described above
ENTERTAINMENT- ( 25 pts maximum) - judge on basis of audience appeal as you perceive it.
All quartets should be singing the same arrangement. Familiar embellishments (tidlies), etc. are permitted. However changing or adding lyrics to
achieve humor is prohibited and constitutes just cause for disqualification. Quartets may be allowed up to three ”start overs”.
Comedy Quartet Contest
The judges are off the hook. The audience will select the winner by simple ballot. Any song or parody may be sung. Although humor is the main objective, good singing is still a requirement. Comedy quartets will sing after the regular contest has been concluded. This should be a lot of fun.
